We have a lot of funny customer service messages at K Smart Sign, and a lot of them are about mistakes made when installing your house sign. Whether you're installing a new house sign or replacing an old one, there are common mistakes that people often make during the installation process. In this blog post, we'll explore four of these mistakes and provide you with tips on how to avoid them.

  1. Neglecting Proper Planning

One of the most common mistakes people make when installing their house sign is failing to plan adequately. Proper planning involves considering various factors such as the sign's design, size, location, and materials. It's essential to take your time to choose a sign that complements your home's architecture and your personal style. Think about visibility from the street, readability of the house number, and any local regulations or homeowner's association guidelines.

Tip: Before purchasing a house sign, create a checklist of your requirements and consult with professionals if necessary. This will help ensure that your sign is not only visually appealing but also functional and compliant with local regulations.

  1. Incorrect Placement

House sign placement is a critical aspect of its effectiveness. Many people make the mistake of installing their sign in a location that is either too high, too low, or obscured by landscaping or other objects. A poorly placed sign can make it difficult for visitors, delivery personnel, and emergency services to find your home. To help you with placement, our signs include a handy template, which you can attach to the wall and use to drill in holes to your wall. NB: do NOT drill holes that are too big as this will cause the sign to shake and move around! (5mm is standard).

Tip: When choosing the placement for your house sign, consider visibility from the street and ease of access. Make sure it's well-lit, unobstructed by trees or bushes, and positioned at eye level. It should be easily visible both during the day and at night.

  1. Using the Wrong Hardware

Another common mistake is using the wrong hardware for installation. Each sign may require different types of screws, anchors, or brackets for secure attachment, as well as using the appropriate screwdriver (do NOT use a power screwdriver on our signs!). Using inappropriate hardware can lead to a sign that's not properly secured, risking damage or falling off over time.

And of course, the brown protective film should be removed - it's not a part of the sign!

Tip: Always follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the installation of your specific house sign.

  1. Ignoring Maintenance

Once your house sign is installed, it's essential to maintain it regularly. Neglecting maintenance can lead to a sign that deteriorates over time, losing its visual appeal and functionality. Exposure to the elements, especially in harsh weather conditions, can cause fading, rusting, or warping.

Tip: To keep your house sign looking its best, clean it periodically using mild soap and water. For metal signs, consider applying a protective coating to prevent rust. Check for loose screws or other signs of wear, and make any necessary repairs promptly.

Installing a house sign may seem like a straightforward task, but avoiding common mistakes is crucial to ensuring that your sign serves its purpose effectively and enhances the curb appeal of your home. By properly planning, choosing the right location, using the correct hardware, and maintaining your sign, you can create a lasting impression that welcomes guests and helps them find your home with ease.
